The effect of formic acid supplemented in feed for growing and finishing pigs

This study aims to determine the effect of acid formic supplemented in feed for growing and finishing pigs to replace antibiotics for preventing of diarrhoea and stimulating growth in pigs. The design included: negative, control, positive control using 180 ppm chlotetracycline and other 3 treatment using three levels of formic acid (potassium diformate), i.e. 0.14% - 0.21% - 0.28%. Total of 400 pigs of the three way crossed breed Duroc x (Yorkshire x Landrace) at 60 day old with an average of 20 kg body weight were allocated into five treatments with 4 replicates per treatment and 20 heads per replicate. Supplementation 0.21% formic acid in feed for pigs were improved 2.3% of weight gain, reduced 1.69% feed conversion ratio, saved 0.65% feed per kg weight gain and reduced 25.2% incidence of diarrhoea compared to negative control one. Supplementation formic acid or chlortetracyline were good in preventing of diarrhoea and stimulating growth in growing pig, but not evident in preventing of diarrhoea and stimulating growth in fattening pig. Non signification in statistics between treatment using 180 ppm chlortetracycline and treatment using 0.21% formic acid. Thus, antibiotics and formic acid had the same effect on controlling diarrhoea and stimulating growth of pigs. Consequently, it is suggested that formic acid may be used to replace antibiotic as a feed additive in the diets for pigs.
