Sand mattress for river bank protection : a low cost solution for Mekong dalta area

River bank erosion in Mekong delta area occurs on a large scale, and increasingly severe, causing damage to persons and property of people, restricting social-economic development. Different structural measures to protect river banks have been applied with significanf significant effect on the economy and society. However, due to high cost for large projects many erosion areas have not been protected. the sand mattress solution to protect the river bank from erosion have been developed and first time appkied applied in Vietnam. New solutions have been studied in the Hydraulic Laboratory of the SIWRR and tested on a Saigon river bank section. Research results show that sand mattress can be widely used as a low - cost solution to protect the river banks in Mekong delta area. The article below presents the scientific basis and practical application of the sand mattress for bank protection.
