Laboratory analyses have been performed after spontaneous water intoxication in calves. Individual blood samples were obtained from v. jugularis from all animals with clinical signs of intoxication as well as from healthy calves to determine haemoglobin concentrations, erythrocytes, total and differential leukocyte counts, haematocrit, mean corpuscular haemoglobin - MHC, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration - MHCH, mean corpuscular volume - MCV, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, total protein and protein fractions, aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase, gamma-glutamyl-transferase, total bilirubin, blood glucose, chlorides, sodium, potassium, urea, creatinine, calcium, inorganic phosphate and magnesium. It was found out that water intoxication in calves was accompanied by hypochromaemia and erythropaenia - hypochromic anaemia, leukocytosis, neutrophilia with regenerative shift to metamyelocytes, lymphocytopenia, aneosinophilia, reduced haematocrit, enhanced erythrocyte sedimentation rate, hypochloraemia, hyponatriemia, hypocalcaemia, hypophosphataemia, hypomagnesaemia, bilirubinaemia, increased blood urea and creatinine, hypoproteinaemia and increased ASAT activity. Urine samples were also obtained from all animals for physical, chemical analysis and microscopy. Decreased density, high-degree haemoglobinuria, proteinuria, aciduria and plenty of renal parenchymal cells in the sediment have been observed. The observed paraclinical changes could be used in the diagnostics, differential diagnostics and prognosis of water intoxication in animals.
