Borisova, A., Institute of Agriculture, Kyustendil (Bulgaria)
A survey was carried out to check for pome fruit viruses in the Kyustendil region of Bulgaria, between 2004 – 2008. In total, 282 accessions of apple from 51 cultivars and 75 of pear from 12 cultivars were tested using randomly collected samples of leaves and petals and processed using Enzyme Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA). All samples were tested by DAS- ELISA for the presence of Apple stem grooving virus (ASGV), Apple chlorotic leaf spot virus (ACLSV) and Apple mosaic virus (ApMV). The specific infection rate of ASGV was 2.8% in apple and 8.0% in pear. The frequency of mixed infection was 22.3% in combination ACLSV+ ASGV in infected apple trees, in pear – 2.7% (ACLSV+ ASGV). The lack of symptoms in most of the ACLSV and ASGV infected plant samples exemplifies the need to be test more samples to determine the infection rate of these viruses in Bulgaria.
