For establishment the biochemical composition of alfalfa root mass during the period 2006-2009 in IFC – Pleven is conducted field experiment with 8 alfalfa varieties: Europe, Prista 2, Prista 3, Prista 4, Obnova 10, Pleven 6, Dara and Multifoliate. The average content of crude protein, crude fiber, watersoluble sugars and saponins in alfalfa root mass for four-year period of cultivation was 123.59, 251.04, 85.52 и 21.31 g/kg respectively. Dynamics by years showed maximums in regard to the amount of crude protein and water-soluble sugars during the second year and in regard to the amount of crude fiber and saponins – during the fourth year. All chemical compounds with exception of the crude protein had lower concentration in the spring period compared to the autumn one. From studied alfalfa varieties with highest content in root mass in regard to crude protein were Multifoliate, Prista 4 and Pleven 6; crude fiber – Prista 4, Pleven 6 and Prista 3; water-soluble sugars – Dara, Prista 2, Pleven 6 and Obnova 10 and saponins – Dara, Multifoliate and Obnova 10. The average content of calcium and phosphorus in alfalfa root mass was 7.05 and 2.28 g/kg respectively. With more favorable mineral composition is distinguished the varieties Europe, Prista 2 and Obnova 10.
