In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus there was examined a problem of social development of rural area. There were analyzed the tendencies in the changing of social infrastructure of rural settlements, examined the questions of housing conditions improvement in rural areas and financing social infrastructure. There were generalized peculiarities of solving the problem of retention of qualified staff in rural areas. For the determination of tendencies of further development of rural settlements in course of the study there was proposed a model of sustainable development of rural settlements, the key elements of which were success of an agricultural enterprise development located in the rural areas, distance level of a rural settlement from a regional centre. The rate of population under 16 could be considered as an integral index of sustainable development. Taking into account the fact that at present in rural areas of Belarus there are rural settlements with different population number, it was proposed to realize rural social policy taking into account different types of settlements.
