Agria equipment and sheep - strong partners in landscape conservation
2010
Trabold, Th., agria-Werke GmbH, Moeckmuehl (Germany)
Nature conservation and landscape management are an increasingly important sales market for alpine grassland technology. Aparty from scenery, the production targets of landscape conservation are mainly protected species. What methods and equipment can be used specifi cally to promote these species? The results of various studies and over 20 years of experience gained by the author in communal land management in nature conservation provide answers to how conservation effi ciency can be demonstrably improved using the proper technology and method optimisation. To sum up, it can be established that for many plant species mowing is better suited to species conservation than mulching, and that the use of cutter bars instead of rotating mowers makes a major contribution to fauna conservation. The author points out, however, that procedures should be assessed as a whole, and not in subsequent procedural steps (for example windrowing or baling) which will disproportionately affect species spared during mowing.
