A survey to identify virus diseases affecting food legume (faba bean, pea and lentil) crops at different locations in Yemen was conducted during September 15-24, 2004. A total of 2813 (1290 faba bean, 964 pea and 559 lentil) samples were randomly collected from 16 (7 faba bean, 6 pea and 3 lentil) fields. Virus diseases incidence was determined on the basis of laboratory testing of samples against antisera of 14 legume viruses by Tissue blot immunoassay (TBIA). In faba bean fields, Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) was the most common (63.3%), followed by Luteoviruses (16.7%); whereas In pea and lentil fields, Luteoviruses were the most common (43.9 and 17.9%, respectively), followed by Pea seed borne mosaic virus (PSbMV) (10.9 and 5.2%, respectively). When Luteovirus (768) samples were tested again with specific monoclonal antibodies, the results showed that Beet western yellows virus (BWYV) was detected in 7 samples, Bean leafroll virus (BLRV) in 5 samples, but the rest of the samples did not react with any of the monoclonais specific viruses used, suggesting that other unidentified luteoviruses in which infect food legumes in Yemen could be present. This is the first report of BWYV naturally infecting food legumes In Yemen.
