The Effect of replacing fish-meal with soybean-meal on growth performance, feed utilization, blood parameters and body composition of nile Tilapia oreochromis niloticus

. The results indicate that the interaction between or among dietary protein levels and sources significantly (P0.01 or 0.05) affected the live body weight and daily body gain. Within each dietary protein level, increased soybean-meal level in fish diets decreased growth performance parameters, while feed conversion and protein efficiency ratio were insignificantly affected with the interaction between dietary protein levels and sources. Serum total protein, albumin, globulin, aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine amino transaminase (ALT), glucose and total lipids concentrations were in signifcantly affected with the interaction between dietary protein level and source. Within each dietary protein level, increasing soybean-meal contents in tilapia fish diets slightly decreased serum total protein, albumin and total lipids concentrations. Analysis of fish body composition of Nile tilapia was insignificantly affected with dietary protein level and source, except fat content which was affected significantly (P0.05) with dietary protein level and source. These results indicated that soybean-meal can be used successfully as a replacement for fish-meal protein in diet for Nile tilapia fish, the least-cost diets containing plant proteins (soybean-meal) as replacements for all fish-meal are suitable for tilapia fish. Reducing protein and fish-meal levels and feeding soybean protein-based diet, help to reduce operating costs and increase final profits.
