Effect of marrow fruit size on the infestation by the cucurbit fly, Dacus ciliatus, leow and the melon fly, Dacus frontalis backer

This study was carried out in order to estimate the effect of different sizes of marrow fruits (small, medium and large fruits) on the infestation by the cucurbit fly, Dacus ciliatus (Leow) and the melon fly, Dacus frontalis Becker. The obtained results showed that the small fruits were the most favorite ones, produced large number of pupae although they got few numbers of punctures. There were ascending significant effects of the increasing size fruits and pupae weights, and descending significant effects of the increasing size fruits and egg-larval and pupal periods and no significant effects for fruit size on sex ratio. The biochemical analysis for small, medium and large fruits indicated that the small fruits had high amounts of protein, phenols, potassium, magnesium and phosphorus, furthermore the small fruit had low amounts of carbohydrates, glucose and moisture content, and this explained why the small fruits more favorite to the infestation by both of D. ciliatus and D. frontalis than the large fruits.
