At present, rhizomania and curly top are the most important viral diseases of sugar beet in Iran and are the main problems in some beet production areas. Between these two diseases, rhizomania is more important because of gradual spread in the country and its damage. Researches of Sugar Beet Seed Institue (SBSI) on rhizomania viral disease was started in 1999. In the same year, it was systematically and porpusefully accelerated by formulation and approval of the plan "Rhizomania and curlytop diseases of sugar beet in Iran: genetics, breeding, agronomy and biotechnology". In this plan, 16 projects with breeding (13 projects) and agronomic (2 projects) nature have been forcasted. Now after writing this report, this design can be claimed to be terminated except the 15th project. Breeding and agronomical studies on rhizomania disease management were successful, too. Using agronomical methods and rhizomania tolerant pollinator has led to the breeding and providing a resistance hybrid whose planting has limited the disease expansion. In addition to the current hybrids, different breeding materials were also produced. By using these materials and applying breeding methods, new resistant hybrids can be developed. However, complete rhizomania eradication needs more extensive breeding researches.
