In Iran, 17.14% of total country area (about 15-18 × 106 ha) is occupied by saline soil. Renovatation and drainage of saline soils by advanced irrigation systems is expensive. Today, salinity stress in Isfahan, Azarbaijan, Khorasan, Fars, Kerman and other regions has affected sugar beet production and has reduced the yield by 30%. Research activities of Sugar Beet Seed Institute (SBSI) for breeding tolerance to environmental stresses were started in 1996 with "Environmental Stresses" design with sub-designs of drought and salinity. In sub-design of salinity, 17 projects were forecasted with breeding (8 projects) and agronomic (8 projects) nature and current project. In this section, the characteristics, targets and predicted methods of 17 subjected projects in "Environmental stresses: salinity" sub-design are presented. The objective of this study was to collect information and accomplishments of salinity stress projects. Nine projects of given 17 projects in this sub-design were finished and received the register no. The absracts of these projects were separately cited in this report.
