Study on the effect of plant density, different irrigation levels and theirs interaction effects on water use efficiency and yield of granular maize (single Cross-704 cv.) in Miandoab region.

Production of agricultural crops depends on soil, water, human power and technical science. Providing of human power, machinery and technical science could be possible by proper planning and investment so they can not be limiting factors. Similarly, because of the higher ratio of soil to water in Iran, soil is not a serious limiting factor, leaving that water to be as major limiting factor. Therefore it is very important to increase water use efficiency by any methods. In this relation, an experiment was conducted to study the effect of four amount of irrigation and five planting density on water use efficiency, yield and yield components of corn cultivar "single cross 700" in Miandoab region of Iran. Treatment were combination of five planting density with in row distances of 14.5, 17.5,20.5, 23.5 and 26.5 cm (with a fixed between row spaces of 75cm) and 4 levels of irrigation including 50, 75, 100 and 125 % of full irrigation which were studied using split plots on the base of randomized complete blocks design in 3 replications during 2003-2004. According to the results the irrigation and density treatments end their interactions was affected yield of corn at P1%. The highest yield (9.93 t) was obtained with full irrigation (10,588 cubic meter of water). The most balanced production as indicated by balance of plant height, the number of corn per plant, weight of 1000 seeds was obtained from full irrigation and 20.5 cm in row spacing. Reduction of crop yield with irrigation amount lower than 75% of water requirement was so evident that planting density could not have a significant effect on yield. The highest water use efficiency was obtained from irrigation with 50% of water requirement and planting densities of 17.5 and 20.5 cm as 1.15 kg per a one cubic meter of water. The lowest water use efficiency was obtained from irrigation with 125% of water requirement and planting density of 23.5 cm as 0.63 kg per a one cubic meter of water.
