Evaluation of early maturing safflower lines in fall planting in the semicold rain-fed conditions

Earliness in Safflower is one of the most important characters in rainfed conditions. This character can play an important rote in safflower development. To evaluate Safflower early lines and select the desirable lines in rainfed conditions, 127 genotypes planted in observation nursery in Sararood dryland agricultural research station. 120 lines were selected from IL-111 and PI-537598 alongwith 7 early varieties planted each in 2 rows with 4 meter length and 35 cm row spacing. Genotypes planted in fall before the first effective rain. Results showed that the lines selected from PI-537598 had the minimum number of days to flowering and maturing. The earliest genotypes were PI-S11 and PI-S43 having 207 days to maturing. Clustering of genotypes on the basis of number of days to flowering and maturing, oil content and seed yield revealed 3 clusters. The first cluster having 22 members had the minimum days to flowering, maturity and the highest mean of oil content and seed yield. So, all genotypes in the first cluster alongwith other 40 genotypes selected to evaluate in replicated trials in next year.
