Preliminary evaluation of yield in different lines of bread wheat for temperate zone under late season drought conditions (WSPRWYT- M)

Considering importance of late season drought and shortage of water or no access to enough water for irrigation with the aim of releasing tolerant varieties to terminal drought, this experiment was carried out in Karaj station in 2009/2010 cropping season. Two hundred and sixteen (216) lines and varieties of wheat along with four check cultivars ( Parsi, Sivand, Bahar and Pishtaz,) were planted and evaluated in two separate experiments, one with non-stress and in other one stress applied from anthesis to physiological maturity .These materials have been forwarded by selecting from stations in temperate zone and International nurseries as well. During the cropping cycle besides, field management practices, some traits including: Days to heading (DHE), Plant Height (PLH), lodging%, reaction to diseases under natural condition, shattering, Days to maturity (DMA) and phenotypic appearance in relation to response to drought were recorded. After harvesting, thousand kernels weight and grain yield per plot weighed and recorded separately. Drought susceptibility and tolerance indices such as STI, SSI, GMP, MP and Tol were calculated for all investigated entries based on 1000-kernel weight and grain yield. Finally considering the recorded data and , vegetative assessments, favorite morphological characters(for example: Kernel shrinkage and drought tolerance indices (STI, SSI,MP, GMP and TOL) thirty-Six (36) superior lines were selected to be evaluated/ studied for drought tolerance in advanced yield trials(WS-ARWYT-M) for moderate areas in next cropping season .
