Xerophytic and mesophytic grassland and forest fringe vegetation in the Engure Lake catchment area was studied. Vegetation was described basically in 2x2 m or 2 x 1 m plots using the Braun-Blanquet method. Totally 69 relevés were included in the data analysis. According to the similarity of species composition vegetation units (groups) were distinguished and classified into three vegetation classes: Festuco-Brometea (calcareous grassland-like communities), Trifolio-Geranietea (forest fringe communities) and (calcareous grassland-like communities), Trifolio-Geranietea (forest fringe communities) and Koelerio-Corynephoretea (forest fringe, clear-cut, glade communities). Calcareous grassland-like community of Festuco-Brometea was the species-richest among the described communities. The roadside communities in the study area are important as refuges for many rare plant species and declining indicator species of semi-natural grasslands. The remaining roadside vegetation patches are of particular importance in conservation of species diversity and ensure the connectivity of semi-natural habitats and related species on regional scale.
