Nutrient and heavy metal concentrations, their uptake and distribution in hempedu bumi (Andrographis paniculata) and misai kuching (Orthosiphon stamineus) grown under rubber trees

King of Bitter or 'hempedu bumi' (Andrographis paniculata) and Java tea or 'misai kucing' (Orthosiphon stamineus) were among the potential herbs in Malaysia for commercial production. There was, however, little or no information on the agronomic requirements of these two herbal species. This paper presents data on nutrient concentration, uptake and distribution of 12 weeks old 'hempedu bumi' (HB) and 'misai kucing' (MK) grown as intercrops with rubber trees on sandy soils. The herbs were fertilised with processed poultry manure and applied as basal at 30 t/ha. The mean nitrogen (N) concentration in HB leaf was 4.66% and in MK leaf was 4.03 %. The N concentration in decreasing order in different plant parts of both species was leaf, stem and root. The mean concentration of phosphorus (P) in MK leaf was higher (0.92%) than in HB leaf (0.31 %) while the mean concentration of potassium (K) was higher in HB leaf (3.38%) than in MK leaf (2.50%). Calc ium (Ca) concentration for HB was 4.07% and for MK was 2.07%. Magnesium (Mg) concentration was about the same in the leaves for both species (0.93%-1.02%). The nutrient uptake data presented in this paper provides valuable information on the quantities of nutrients required to achieve a target yield. The information can be used as a guide in the formulation of fertiliser recommendation for these two species, as well as to serve as a reference for future fertiliser management research on the species. Micronutrient concentrations and uptake as well as heavy metal concentrations in the various plant parts were also presented.
