A survey on the aquatic insects community was conducted at Mesisilad stream in Melalap, Keningau, Sabah during the Melalap Scientific Expedition in Melalap, Crocker Range, Keningau in 2004. A total of 1245 individuals of aquatic insects belonging to 8 orders and 31 families were collected from Mesisilad stream. The aquatic insects communities were dominated by Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera indicating a pristine freshwater condition. The family Biotic Index (FBI) adapted from Hillsenhoff (1988) was calculated to estimate the quality of the water in the river. The FBI scores were 2.45 - 2.93, categorized as excellent water quality in all sampling stations. This study indicates that aquatic insects can be used for the biological monitoring of water quality. This report summarizes the first study examining aquatic insects communities in Melalap area.
