Peptones were produced at Lembaga Penelitian Penyakit Hewan (Animal Disease Research Institute) by hydrolysing native protein of animal origin (cattle and buffalo testis), using proteiolytic enzymes from cattle and buffalo pancreas (pancreatic digest). Individual components of these peptones have not been completely analysed and identified. However, the peptone digest has been found very satisfactory to support the growth of bacteria by its use for several years at Animal Disease Research Institute, Bogor (unpublished data). The author believes that the peptone preparation obtained is useful for medium ingredient, but for special media, imported peptones should still be used. Apart from this the production procedure which is described can possibly be carried out by small isolated laboratories where imported peptones are difficult to obtain.
