The potential utilization of seaweed for foliar application on Thompson seedless vitis vinifera; grapevines grown in calcareous soil.

Seaweed extract sprays of 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 per cent, twice a week before full bloom and at fruit set stage, as well as gibberellin of 20 and 40 ppm at the same stages, respectively and control (water spray) were applied to Thompson seedless grapevines grown in calcareous soil throughout 1985 and 1986 seasons. Seaweed sprays at all concentrations increased the number of berries per lateral (fruit set). Likewise, seaweed extract at 0.15% and gibberellin treatments increased cluster weight, berry weight and size, juice volume and acidity than the control. Seaweed extract treatments (0.10 and 0.15%) increased the TSS content in the juice as compared with control. As for petiole mineral content, the gibberellin treatment decreased phosphorus than 0.20% seaweed extract treatment and increased manganese than the control. The vines treated with 0.15% seaweed extrect had higher petiole calcium. Magnesium level did not affect with the different treatments. Nitrogen, potassium, zinc and copper content in the leaf petioles of treated vines did not show a definite trend.
