Heterosis and nature of gene action studies on yield and related traits of okra Hibiscus esculentus L.

Earliness and total yield as a number and weight of pods in okra as well as, some pod traits such as average pod weight, length, diameter and dry matter content have been genetically analysed by means of 6x6 partial diallel cross. The results could be summarized as follows:- 1. Heterosis over the mid-parent was significant or highly significant for all traits except that of average pod length. Meanwhile, heterosis measured over the better parent was significant only for total yield (pod number and weight). 2. Additive gene effects were important than non-additive gene effects for the early yield, average pod weight, length and diameter. However, both additive and non- additive gene effects were important in the inheritance of total yield (pod number and weight), and dry matter content. 3. Heritability estimates in broad sense were high for early yield (number of pods), total yield (number and weight of pods), average pod length, diameter and dry matter content, while it was intermediate for early yield and average pod weight. Heritability estimates in narrow sense were high for early yield (number of pods), average pod length, diameter and dry matter content, while it was relatively low for average pod weight and low for the rest of the other traits.
