Barley production economics in Syria and Turkey: A comparative study.

Two surveys were conducted in Syria and Turkey in neighboring survey areas to examine the economic aspects of barley in both countries, to gain a better understanding of the barley production environment, and to explain the reasons for similarities and differences between the two countries, and to develop recommendations to improve barley production in both countries. The results indicated that there are significant differences between yields in Turkey and Syria arising from climate, natural environment, socio-economic factors, production systems, farmers' practices, and fertilizer application by farmers. Farmers' practices and fertilizer application have an important role on yields e.g. determination of the most appropriate number and method of tillage by climatic zones and by soil types and determination of seed rates by zones and by soil types plus seeding methods. Because the climatic conditions are similar in Zone (A) of Turkey and Zone (2) in Syria, there was no significant difference between the yields of Zone (A) and Zone (2). The average yields of these two zones were 931 kg/ha in zone (A) and 919 kg/ha in zone (2). Analysis of the natural environment, socio-economic indicators, production systems, farmers' practices and amount of fertilizer application showed many similarities. Four years of on-farm trials conducted by ICARDA in cooperation with the Soils Directorate of Syria showed that there is a potential to increase barley yields in Zone (2) by between 1300-1630 kg/ha due to fertilizer use and other management factors.
