Influence of dilution and particle size on gypsum solubility of gypsiferous soils.

As a sparingly soluble salt, the solubility of gypsum is highly dependent upon factors like magnitude of dilution and particle size. Therefore, to assess the influence of these factors, soil samples were collected from two locations at various depths from gypsiferous soils of Iraq. The samples were passed through 10, 50, 100, and 270 mesh sieves and soil at each size range was extracted using soil: water ratio of 1:50, 1:10 and 1:500 which were used in the analysis of gypsum. The studies conclusively indicated that the solubility of gypsum is directly proportional to the increased dilution but conversely proportional to the particle size, i.e., its solubility linearly increases with increasing mesh number and soil: water ratio. The distribution of gypsum along the depth of soil profile, however, was not consistent.
