Soybean plants were thinned by cutting the whole plant from the population stand of 430,000 plants per hectare to the normal plant population of 215,000 plants per hectare at V3, V5, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R5-R6 growth stages respectively. By thining at various growth stages, it was found that removal of competition significantly enhanced the increment of pod number and seed yield per plant. In contrary, neither seed number per pod nor seed size of soybean were affected by reducing competition which had been imposed by thining. It was found that the lower portion of soybean canopy, and in some instances, the middle level were more sentitive to competition than the top. Plant competition would result in the decrease in yield and number of pods per plant, especially if competition occurred after the plant had passed V5 growth stage.
