The results of an empirical test relating the impact of the frequency of food consumption and intake levels of total sugar on child and adolescent obesity are described and discussed. Data were obtained from a US nationwide survey of food intake diaries from 972 individuals, ages 5-18 years; the study assessed the possibility of a relationship between eating patterns, total sugar intake and weight/height ratios (obesity index) using cross-tabulation and regression analysis. While no general relationship was found between eating patterns and obesity in the present population sample, it is suggested that more homogeneous population samples be analyzed before excluding possible relationships between snack consumption levels and obesity.
