Research results show that a higher percentage of protein than fat in milk during the first lactation is accompanied by a very low fat content of milk, and is not observed in the next lactation periods. Moreover, most of cows with a high protein level are eliminated from herds before the second calving. This indicates that a higher percentage of protein than fat in milk during the first lactation cannot be the only criterion of cow selection aimed at improving this trait.
