Towards the end of 1989, a new pest was introduced into greenhouses in Czechoslovakia, the Cuban-laurel thrips, Gynaikothrips ficorum, Thysanoptera. It was introduced from Cuba on young plats of Ficus nitida. The species belongs to the family of Phleothripidae; it is a rather large thrips 2.5-3.5 mm in size, entirely black with uniformly yellow antennae. Body is long and slender, last abdominal segment elongated in a long parallel-sided tube. Hind corners of pronotum bear only one long posteroangular seta. On the other hand, the closely related G. uzeli from Malaysia has two long postangular setae, but has not been found in Europe till now. Distribution of G. ficorum is pantropical at present, nevertheless it originates from Central America. Its main host plant is Ficus nitida, but it damages to a lesser extent also other Ficus species, e.g. F. retusa, F. elastica and F. carnosa. Especially sorts with small and soft leaves are infested. Adult thrips feed on young soft, light-green leaves, causing sunken reddish spots along the midrib. The leaf rolls in, curles and becomes hard and tough, lastly yellow to brown and drops down. In curled leaf-galls on the plant a new generation develops. According to the temperature and humidity in the greenhouse, the reproduction can last for a whole year. If the number of thrips is low, plucking and burning of infested leaves is sufficient. For spraving, Metathion E 50 (0.2 per cent) or other similar insecticides can be recommended.
