[Mongolian pastoral livestock: productivity and biological features]. [Mongolian]
1989
Tumurjav M.
This is the first book to summarise the present knowledge of the 5 traditional Mongolian animals: horses, cattle, camels, sheep and goats, which are maintained on natural pasture all the year round. It is largely based on investigations by the author and other researchers into the animals' biology, physiology, morphology, ecology, behaviour and productivity. It is divided into 9 chapters: The 1st chapter deals with ecological and geographical factors; their influence on grazing animals and the biological peculiarities of the 5 kinds of animals kept under Central Asiatic climatic conditions. The 2nd chapter gives a historical account of the animals' domestication and indicates their origins. Chapter 3 to 7 are individually devoted to the Mongolian native farm animals. The population and distribution of specific breeds and their biological, physiological, morphological and reproductive characteristics and economic significance are depicted in detail. In the 8th chapter, the author describes the characteristics and treatment of animal diseases. The final chapter describes the Mongol's traditional methods of treating sick animals, with special attention given to blood-letting and medicinal herbs.
