Haemoglobin polymorphism in sheep populations in Montenegro (Yugoslavia) was studied. It was established that the haemoglobin system in the studied populations was controlled by two allelic genes marked with HbA and HbB, with characteristic frequences depending upon the area of breeding, primarily the altitude. The studies of haemoglobin types in the population of imported Wuerttenberg breed and its crosses with Pivka sheep indicate that in crosses the ratio of haemoglobin types significantly changes as compared to the populations of the native sheep.
