Effects of dietary levels and energy restriction on energy utilisation [chickens].

A study was made on the effects of feed and metabolisable energy restriction on two strains of laying hens. The result indicated that restriction on only energy component over short duration did not produce adverse effect on egg production so long as the body fat reserve, which compensated energy shortage, was not mobilised beyond 8% of total body fat content. Dietary energy, though constitutes the largest component in the diet, is not a dominant factor in egg production. Restriction of feed or energy intake resulted in depletion of body fat but body protein was unaffected. The maintenance requirements for light and medium strains hens were found to be 128 and 113 kcal/kg 0.75/d. The net efficiency for light strain hens of 64% was higher than the 54% value obtained for medium strain hens.
