Of the almost 2000 species belonging to the Astragalus papilionaceous genus found in grassland associations, 11 occur in grasslands in the drier parts of Hungary. Samples for quality analyses were collected during the pre-flowering development phase. The Astragalus species do not have a specific soil requirement, occuring under a wide range of pH, lime content and soil viscosity conditions. They are definitely calciphilous, but the lime requirements of A. cicer. They are capable of adapting to a wide range of mineral supplies. The Ca contents of the samples ranged from 8.6-16.2 g/kg, with a Ca/P ratio of 3.55, giving them excellent feed value. The samples also had a very fevourable crude protein content. In the msjority of samples, the quantity of antinutritive haemolytic saponines was below the demonstration limit /0.5 g/kg dry matter/. None of the Hungarian species accumulates selenium; the selenium contents recorded were in accordance with the average selenium content of the other species in the given grassland plant association. The trends for other macro- and microelement components of the Astragalus species were characteristic of papilionaceous plants in Hungary.
