Impact of mowing and climatic factors on the flora changes of permanent plots of drainage canals in the North-eastern Croatia [Yugoslavia].

On three permanent plots of 100 m2 each, over the banks and slope of drainage canal Cvetko near Klisa village in the northeastern Croatia, (Yugoslavia), qualitative and quantitative flora changes prior and following mowings (there were different mowings number in a year) were observed, aiming at dominant species Sorghum halepense (Johnson grass) supression. The shares of above-ground biomass of Sorghum halepense varied in the plots prior to mowing (P1, P2 and P3) according to climatic conditions through the course of growth period, being the least in the seasons with more humid and colder springs (1984, 1985), when a domination of Magnoliatae in the total biomass was established. Longterm mowing, together with climatic factors, affected the floristic content changes of compositions, regarding their population, biomass percentage and persistence of the species, as well as life forms relations. Two and three mowings in a year (P2 and P3) were significantly more effective than only one mowing (P1), particularly in respect of S. halepense biomass share decrease, as well as of total biomass and species number. This decrease of number was especially marked in the structure of Magnoliatae therophytes, which experienced the persistence percentage decrease in comparison to chemicryptophyte, what allowed anticipation of further sucession towards grassy communities. In spite of several times mowing, S.halepense was subsequently present in spring seasons with a considerable biomass share and persistence. A conclusion followed that longterm canals mowing could notcompletely control this agressive plant species.
