A method based on the use of desiccant substances to spray the plants was employed for testing the adaptation of wheat to stress. The effect of the preparations Harvade 25F, Basta and sodium chlorate were compared in field and in spike culture. Harvade had a milder effect than the other two. Under the natural conditions the desiccant sprays reduced the number of developed grains and the weight of the grains, and the number of spikelets with undeveloped grains increased. In the spike culture the productivity of the ears after sprays changed through the weight of the grains. The effect of a five-day water stress and the effect of the ears'exposure at 47 degrees C for an hour were examined in vitro. A positive correlation was recorded between the effect of high temperature the 14th day after anthesis and the effects of all sprays under the conditions of spike culture. Only the spray with Harvade 25F did not make any change in the grain weight order of the varieties in the spike culture and in field. The Hana variety produced the highest grain weight in both cases. The finishing of the ears in nutrient media can be used for testing the varieties for resistance to stress after anthesis with elimination of all undesirable effects of biotic and abiotic factors to which the plants are normally exposed under field conditions.
