The response of faba bean seed yield and its components and associated annual weeds to different population densities and pre-emergence application of herbicides, i.e. Topogard as compared to hand hoeing was studied in two field experiments at Fayoum during 1984/85 and 1985/86 seasons. The results indicated clearly that relative high population density of 168000 plants/fed. (50 cm. between rows) suppressed weed growth to an adequate extent that it resulted in increase in seed yield. All herbicides treatments used throughout the two growing seasons were of no harmful effect on the faba bean plants and outyielded the seed yield of the weedy check by 43.0-59.7%. Moreover, some growth attributes like plant height, number of branches, number of pods and seed weight showed noticeable increase under herbicide application. Topogard (80% WP) at the rate of 1 kg (ai)/fed. was the most potent herbicide which gave highest values in weed control of 67.6-80.1% followed by 61.6-73.4% for Gesagard (80% WP) at the same rate.
