This study was conducted during 1983 and 1984 in Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas. The principal objective was to develop a methodology for simulating the damage caused by insects that attack the corn root system, for use in rapid and systematic evaluation of genotypes and to identify sources of resistance to this sort of damage. The most efficient form of simulation was the regular cutting of corn plant roots by introducing a spatula in the soil at 2.0 cm from the stalk. The number of cuts determinate the degree of damage to the plants. A strong correlation was found between the yields of the different varieties with and without simulated damage. The genotypes with the highest yield in plots without damage were the ones that produced the most in the plots. Of all of the genotypes evaluated, those that consistently produced the best yields with and without simulated damage to the root system were the hybrid varieties H-422, H-421 and Pioneer 3147.
