The nuclear sterile rice line Yuai derived from F2 population of IR24/Yuzhong 1 is a natural mutant with super dwarfness, cluster and complete sterility. After its cross with Indica lines, the F1 populations were fertile and their plant height declined to the high parents, the F2 populations segragated into two distinct genotypes: the fertile high plants and the sterile dwarf plants in a ratio 3:1. The latter presented the feature of qualitative inheritance. It was preliminarily examined that the inheritances might be controlled by a pair of recessive and pleiotropic genes, not only for the sterility, but also for the cluster and dwarfness.
