Maximum utilization of crop residues as beef cattle feed.

Performance of nine 2 to 2 1/2 year-old beef cattle fed with crop residues supplemented with concentrate and non-protein nitrogen (NPN) was observed for 120 days. Initial weight of the animals showed no significant difference but the final weights revealed marked differences. Results showed highly significant differences in average daily gain in weight, feed conversion ratio, and daily feed consumption. Data also showed that beef cattle requires about 12.41 kg of peanut hay supplemented with rice bran and copra meal per kg gain in weight, 18.8 kg of rice straw and 32.96 kg of corn stover supplemented with urea and copra meal per kg gain in weight, 18.8 kg of rice straw and 32.96 kg of corn stover supplemented with urea and copra meal per kg gain in weight. Dressing percentage of the animals in the study ranged from 51.94 to 55.95%. Peanut hay as the major feed stuff gave the highest net return above production costs.
