Vitamin E deficiency with normal serum vitamin E concentrations in children with chronic cholestasis.

A study of serum vitamin E levels, the serum vitamin E to total lipid ratios, and vitamin E to cholesterol ratios in 11 chronic cholestasis children having vitamin E deficiency revealed that 8 had low serum vitamin E levels, and low vitamin E to lipid ratios, but 3 had normal serum vitamin E levels. These 3 also had low serum vitamin E to total lipid ratios, but 2 of the 3 had normal serum vitamin E to cholesterol ratios. Both ratios and serum vitamin E levels were normal in 4 additional patients who were not vitamin E deficient. The results indicate that a child having a normal vitamin E level may have a vitamin E deficiency, and that the serum vitamin E to total lipid ratio may be a reliable index of vitamin E status in chronic cholestasis in children.
