Southern farmers grow sweet corn (Zea may var. rugosa) as a rotated crop with rice in paddy field or as a single crop or inter crop with rubber in upland. Most sweet corn fields in the region are left weedy or partially weeded by hoeing. Herbicides have been rarely used due to an unavailability of suitable herbicides and the risk of its residue for the cropping systems in the region. This study had been conducted in 1985 and 1986 and shows that preemergence application of atrazine 2.24 kg/ha, pendimethalin 1.12 kg/ha, alachlor 2.24 kg/ha and metolachlor 2.24 kg/ha produced good to excellent results. Postemergence application of 2,4-D sodium salt at 1.12 and 0.56 kg/ha resulted in good control of most broadleave weeds but poor control of some hard-to-control braoadleave weeds. Intermediate control of broadleave weeds could be observed when those preemergence herbicides were used at reduced rates. However, the combination of those low concentration preemergence herbicides provided the wider spectrum of weed control at a satisfactory levels. It is suggested therefore that additional studies should be undertaken for placing suitable herbicides in sweet corn in cropping systems of southern Thailand. These results should be used only if sweet corn is solely grown in upland condition.
