Thyroxine counteracts the effect of menhaden oil on fatty acid synthesis in BHE rats.

Two experiments were conducted. In each, rats were fed a 6% fat-64% sucrose diet and de novo fatty acid synthesis was determined. Half of the rats were injected daily with 10 micrograms thyroxine (T4)/100 g body weight/day for seven days. In Experiment 1, the dietary fat was either corn oil or hydrogenated coconut oil. In Experiment 2, the dietary fat was menhaden oil. Treatment with T4 resulted in an increase in fatty acid synthesis in the liver regardless of dietary fat source. Fatty acid synthesis in the fat pad was increased by T4 when corn oil or menhaden oil was fed but not when coconut oil was fed. Plasma fatty acids rose only in those rats fed coconut oil when treated with T4. These results suggest that the effect of T4 on de novo fatty acid synthesis depends on the type of dietary fat included in the diet.
