A survey was conducted from August 1987 to February 1988 in 8 district of East Java, consisting of 112 farmers soybean fields. Information was gathered through the fields by examining the plants, particularly the leaves, the pods and the stems. Each unit sample consisted of 15 hills in a row with 4 replications. The observation was made by counting the number of eggs, nymphs, larvae and adults, and the amount of leaf damages and pod damages. The smaller insects were collected by using a sweep net. The collections were made to determine the presence of a new species of variety. Results of the survey showed that the availability of food plants is an important factor in the course of the soybean insect pest build up in the field at any regions in East Java. The leaf feeders, pod feeder, pod sucking bugs, pod borers and virus vectors were still the important insect pests in the region, although farmers used insecticides very intensively. The average of the soybean leaf defoliation in all districts were more than 12.5 percent (EIL). The seed damages due to the sucking bugs was also more than EIL (2.67 percent). The seed damages by pod feeder was more than 2.67 percent and by pod borers was also more than 2.67 percent. It was concluded that insect pests played an important role in the decrease of soybean yield in East Java. The major vectors of viruses were Bemisa tabaci and Aphis sp. Virus diseases were found at all regions. This problem was also important factor affecting the soybean yield quality and quantity. Heliothis sp. was becoming an important insect pest in East Java, while P. inclusa status was also changed from important pest to potensial pest.
