Spanish; Castilian. Asian pear (hybrids or selections from Pyrus pyrifolia (=P. serotina)) was recently introduced commercially in Chile. At present, net crop productions relatively low, about 1770 trays in the 1989-1990 growing season; however, production may increase significantly in the future. Certain sanitation problems have been observed, among others, European canker (Nectria galligena Bres), has frequently affected new plantings. In this article, we present information regarding this fungus disease, not previously reported on Asian pears in Chile and apparently uncommon worldwide in this fruit crop. Symptoms were characterized by the development of small canker lesions always around a leaf scar. Cankers progressed to complete girdle the shoots inciting a sudden dieback of affected twigs during the summer months. The anamorph of N. galligena was consistently isolated from cankers on potato dextrose agar. Cankers were only found on cvs. Housui and Kosui in a field evaluation maintained for 2 years. Fungicides treatment, benomyl, carbendazim or copper compounds are suggested at leaf fall to avoid a severe infestation.
