Diameter growth of healthy and declining beech (Fagus sylvatica) in North Bohemian mountains.

In the high elevation sites of North Bohemian mountains diameter growth and mineral nutrition of healthy and declining beech were examined. Great differences in the course of growth, especially between stands from different elevations were determined by measuring year ring widths. The element content in leaves and wood of trees as well as water stress cannot explain the pronounced growth deviation between 1976 and 1988. Dendroecological analyses show an obvious increase in weather sensitivity of beech in the last 20 to 30 years and that water stress is not responsible for growth depressions. A lower resistance to frost events seems to be the reason for different growth and the growth depression in high elevation sites after 1950. This increased weather sensitivity seems to be the consequence of the high and long-term input of SO2 in this region.
