Influence of phytochemicals and leaf pubescence of some malvaceous plants on development, survival and oviposition of cotton leafhopper.

Cotton leafhopper, Amrasca biguttula biguttula (Ishida) (Homoptera: Cicadellidae) development, survival and ovipositional preference were studied on 6 malvaceous plant species (Abelmoschus esculentus, Gossypium hirsutum, Hibiscus rosasinensis, Thespesia populnea, Abution indicum, Sia cordifolia) in relation to leaf pubescence and phytochemicals at Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, India. Leaf pubescence which included trichome density, length and orientation on both surfaces of leaf-lamina and leaf-veins mainifested negative correlation with leafhopper survival and oviposition. Overall impact of leaf pubescence was non-significant. None of the plants tested exhibited complete compliment of hair character (dense, long and erect trichomes) to confer resistance against leafhopper. Leaf nutritional constituents viz. moisture, proteins and total sugars showed positive role in leafhopper survival and oviposition. Leaf phosphorus, total phenols and epicuticular waxes exhibited significant and negative correlation with leafhopper survival and oviposition. Potassium and tannin content also affected these parameters adversely.
