Four field experiments, in which the effect of two soil tillages and of nitrogen fertilization level on the maize and sunflower yield and physicochemical properties of soil was compared, were carried out successively in 1976-85. In warm and dry years both crops yielded better at application of direct sowing, whereas in cool and moist years - at plough tillage. The direct sowing led to an increase of the total compactness of soil by 24-100 percent and of the dry soil - by 2-16 percent in relation to the plough tillage. In the no-ploughing treatments an increase of the total C and N, P, K and Mg content in the upper soil layer and distinct decrease of the content of the above elements in deeper layers took place. Also a distinct lowering of the soil pH and a decrease of the Ca content in the arrable layer were observed.
