The effect of climatic conditions and variety on winter wheat yield forming factors, grain yield and quality (gluten content) was examined during 10-year field trials (1980-1990) with 9 winter wheat varieties. Results proved a highly significant influence of weather and variety on yield formation and its structure. Variation caused by weather conditions and year was in spring 70.0 % in the number of plants, 86.9 % in number of spikes (spike area), 27.5 % in grain weight and 92.2 % in total grain yield. The Viginta variety (with the 0.7 % seasonal variation of grain yield) reached the most stable grain yields. Its yield components variability ranged from 5.7 % (grain weight) up to 98.0 % (number of plants per square m in spring). Regina and Livia varieties indicated lower stability. Their yearly yield variation was 85.4 % and 79.3 %, resp. The effect of year on wet gluten content represented 49.8 %. The most balanced gluten content was found in the Viginta variety with yearly variability as low as 6.9 %.
