The most damaging pest on corn is the corn borer. Chemical application was often not satisfactory. Indigenous natural enemies were more prevalent in fields were chemicals scarcely applied. Predators such as lace wing (Chrysopas sp.), Coccinellid beetles (Menochilus sexmaculatus F.), Anthacorid bugs (Orius spp.), ants and spiders were observed from early whorl to silking stages and earwigs from tasseling to maturity. Naturally infested larvae with Nomuraea rileyi and Metarrhizium anisopliae fungi were also found. Inundative releases of Trichogramma evanescens Westw. at various corn growing areas in the Philippines since 1983, caused 40-100 percent egg parasitism to corn borer. T. evanescens has also been shown to establish in these areas. Biological control of insect pest on corn, especially corn stalk borer is possible.
