In order to elucidate the effect of organic fertilizers and different rates of ammonium nitrate on potato and cereals, a longterm field trial with a 3-field crop rotation (potato, spring wheat, barley) was set up on sandy loam Podzoluvisols at the Eerika Experimental Station in autumn 1989. The application of organic fertilizers on the N- background led to the greatest yield increments in the case of potato. The yield increment in the case of manure was 4.6 Mg/ha, in the case of litter together with green manure 4.1 Mg/ha. For cereals the aftereffect of manure and the effect of organic fertilizers on the N- background was insignificant. Considering the present prices of fertilizers, and potato and cereals, it is economically expedient to select at least 20 per cent lower N fertilizer rates than the agronomic optimum.
