Chemical analysis of soil samples in Don Severino Agricultural College, Indang, Cavite [Philippines].

Eight soil samples from the agricultural research areas of the Don Severino Agricultural College [Indang, Cavite, Philippines] were used to determine the nutrient status through measurement of the level of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, organic matter, and its pH. The soil pH was determined with the glass electrode in a 1:1 soil water suspension while organic matter was determined using potassium dichromate method modified by the use of absorption spectrophotometry. Phosphorus was determined by the Olsen's method (absorption spectrophotometry), potassium using Hot H2SO4 Extraction Method by Flame Photometer, and nitrogen using Kjeldahl Method. The soil type in all areas surveyed was clay loam. It was slightly acidic (6.0 to 6.4) where organic matter content was considered at medium range (2.0% to 2.55%). The nitrogen and phosphorus content were low, which were 0.103 to 0.123 and 13.5 ppm to 19.8 ppm respectively while potassium (491 ppm to 990 ppm) was found to be fairly good. Based on the gathered data, nitrogen fertilizers such as urea and ammonium sulfates or compound fertilizer of NP or NPK type are recommended. Although the soil is slightly acidic, liming is recommended for the clay loam type of soil so as to make the clay particle come together to form aggregates. Additional organic matter is needed to increase the level of soil nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur.
