Comparative effects of different force-feeding rates on liver size and growth performance of muscovy (Cairina moschata) ducks.

Fifteen 2-month old male Muscovy ducks (Cairina moschata) were distributed to the following treatments: T1 (control) - 4 were allowed ad libitum feeding; T2 - 5 were forced-fed with boiled ground corn above their voluntary feed intake based on 2.5% of preceding week's body weight; and T3 - 6 were forced fed boiled ground corn above their voluntary feed intake based on 5% of preceding week's body weight of each duck. Force-feeding was done at about 3:00 pm daily for 16 weeks using 40.6 cm and 1.0 cm plastic tubes with plungers. Forced-fed ducks had slightly higher dressing percentage and gizzard weight than those on T1 but the differences were too small to be significant. Ducks on T1 had slightly heavier weights (56 g) than those on T2 (49 g) and T3 (5 g). The ducks on T3 had significantly higher total feed intake than those on T1 and T2. No differences in feed efficiency were observed among the treatments.
